Enclosure: During the current school year, the Virginia Department of Education will be implementing new math assessments that include, technology-enhanced items that require students to demonstrate critical-thinking and problem solving skills. The items will comprise 10 - 15 percent of the test. These new items will only be field-test items in grades 3 - 5 and will not impact students' scores. In a memo dated February 22, 2012, Superintendent of Public Instruction Patricia I. Wright stated "lower mathematics pass rates in 2011 - 2012 indicate that Virginia is expecting more of students - not that students are learning less."

Summary: Early indications from VDOE for the state-wide, fall administration of the new Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II suggests that scores will decrease significantly. These changes will result in fewer student passing the SOL in math. In order to keep the Board informed, staff is prepared to share samples of the new assessment items.
