Summary:
We’ve titled the State of the Division 2020 report “A Time Like Any Other” for good reason. When the 2019-20 school year dawned on August 21, 2019, it opened the window on what was widely anticipated to be an exciting and influential year for the division’s more than 14,000 students and their families, our many community partners, and nearly 3,000 employees.

Then March 13, 2020, happened. In a matter of days, schools across the Commonwealth closed, and while the education process didn’t stop, school divisions were compelled to readjust their operations to fit within strict public health and safety boundaries.

While we have not found perfect solutions for our current challenges, our employees have been truly inspiring in their efforts. I see them doing the best they can to tackle online learning and virus mitigation with a level of bravery and enthusiasm that is truly reassuring. There is a lot going right thanks to our teachers and support staff. I am deeply grateful for and proud of all of our employees for accepting the great challenges before us and taking actions to surmount them. In the face of adversity, they are working to make our facilities and buses safer and to provide high-quality teaching and learning; our employees are amazing and courageous.

And while we have also not found perfect solutions for the equity challenges that face ACPS as they do around the region, Commonwealth, and nation, we are striving. We are building momentum with a focus on equity, evidence-based approaches, and courageous conversations about race and racism and its impact on our school community.

This evening, I will share our updated State of the Division Report and point out a few highlights.

In addition, as we progress from 2019 well into 2020, it is time to start conversations in earnest about 2021 and near term plans to help students to catch up on learning with a focus on equity. I will share plans for these conversations and desired products.

Funding:
The State of the Division should be considered an input in the FY 2022
Funding Request development.
