Summary:
|
These learning resources are intended to serve as division-level approved resources for secondary Physical Education classes. Per School Board Policy IIAA, school and division-level staff have reviewed these materials and deemed them suited to the specific curricular goals and needs of the physical education programs in Albemarle County Schools.
Fitness trackers support cardiovascular health and wellness instruction and assessment. Students use fitness trackers to track and measure personal cardiovascular fitness levels. A fitness tracker (fitbit, apple watch, garmin etc) that has a heart rate monitor is used to measure cardiovascular fitness. Students participate in cardio exercises regularly in the physical education program. Cardio workouts are targeted to be 15-20 minutes in the student’s individual target heart zone at a minimum. Students take screenshots of their workouts from the data collected from their device and submit the screenshots in their fitness log. Students use data they collect to evaluate their progress, set goals, and ultimately develop their own personalized fitness program. Students may use their own fitness trackers or for students who do not have a fitness tracker with a heart rate monitor function the school can provide one.
A fitness tracker with a heart rate feature is required. A fitness tracker that is water resistant/swim proof (in a lake, pool or ocean up to 50 meters) is preferred to allow students flexible options for attaining their cardio fitness goals.
Teachers reviewed a variety of products and determined the FitBit Charge 3 (or similar FitBit tracker with heart rate monitor and water-resistance levels) to be of the highest instructional quality and best value for supporting cardiovascular health and wellness instruction.
Upon the Board's receipt of this informational item, staff will proceed with conducting a 30 day public review of these materials. Staff will review all feedback received from the public during this review and make appropriate recommendations for action at the May 27th School Board meeting.
